Malaysia Records Trade Surplus Despite Uncertain Global Environment

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia recorded a trade surplus of RM7.60 billion in June despite the uncertain global environment, said Minister of International Trade and Industry, Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed.

Statistics on Malaysia's external trade released by the Ministry of International Trade and Industry showed that total trade rose by 7.5 per cent to RM107.11 billion in June against RM99.07 billion in the same month last year.

Exports increased by 8.6 per cent to RM57.35 billion while imports added 6.3 per cent to RM49.75 billion in June.

"This has to do mainly with the Asian countries, especially China, which continues to be a contributor to growth in trade between Malaysia and the world," he told reporters.

Mustapa said the Fukushima crisis in Japan has not much impact on the local trade figures, as shown by the 9.5 per cent increase in exports to RM5.61 billion to Japan, contributed by higher exports of liquefied natural gas and wood products.

He said the government would remain focus to achieve 10 per cent growth in total trade this year.
