Manufacturing Sales in May'12 up 10.0%

Malaysia's manufacturing sales value rose 10.0% or RM4.8 billion in May 2012 to record RM52.5 billion as compared with the corresponding month in 2011, according to the latest statistical release from the Department of Statistics (DOS).

Month-on-month, the sales value in May 2012 increased by a marginal 0.2% or RM0.1 billion. Sales value in April 2012 remained at 5.3 % year-on-year.

The year-on-year increase in sales value in May 2012 was mainly due to significant increases in five major manufacturing industries - Refined Petroleum Products (34.7%), Computer and Computer Peripherals (53.6%), Semiconductor Devices (6.8%); Parts and Accessories for Motor Vehicles and their Engines (39.9%) and Other Chemical Products Not Elsewhere Classified (54.8%).

For the first five months of the year, the sales value of the manufacturing sector rose 7.0% or RM17.0 billion to register RM258.5 billion as compared with the same period in 2011.

The total employment in the manufacturing sector in May 2012 was 1,024,902 persons, a 0.3% increase or 2,972 persons compared with the same month in 2011. Compared with the preceding month, there was a drop of 0.2% or 2,403 persons employed in the manufacturing sector in May 2012.

The total number of employees in April 2012 was a revised positive 0.1% year-on-year to record 1,027,305 persons.

Productivity or average sales value per employee in May 2012 was 9.7% higher at RM51,221 compared with the same month in 2011. Month-on-month, the productivity in May 2012 was 0.5% higher while productivity in April 2012 was a revised positive 4.6% to record RM50,988.year-on-year.

On a cumulative basis for the first five months of 2012, productivity in the sector was 6.7% higher at RM252,182.
