Trade Performance : February 2011 and January - February 2011


The Minister of International Trade and Industry (MITI), YB Dato' Sri Mustapa Mohamed announced that in February 2011, Malaysia's exports grew by 10.7% to RM51.85 billion compared with February 2010. Imports expanded by 11.5% to RM39.21 billion, resulting in a total trade of RM91.06 billion, an increase of 11.0% from the corresponding month in 2010. A trade surplus of RM12.64 billion was registered, making it the 160th consecutive month of trade surplus since November 1997.

Compared with January 2011, exports in February 2011 decreased by 5.5% while imports contracted by 12.6% and total trade declined by 8.7%.

Total trade during the period of January to February 2011 increased by 9.6% to RM190.74 billion, compared with the corresponding period in 2010. This was contributed by the exports value of RM106.69 billion and imports of RM84.06 billion. Exports registered an increase of 7.5% while imports expanded by 12.6% compared with January to February 2010, resulting in a trade surplus of RM22.63 billion.

Exports in February 2011

The increase in exports in February 2011 of RM5.01 billion from a year ago was largely contributed by higher exports of electrical and electronic (E&E) products, refined petroleum products, palm oil, liquefied natural gas (LNG), chemicals and chemical products, crude rubber, manufactures of metal as well as optical and scientific equipment. On a month-on-month basis, exports contracted by 5.5% due to lower exports of palm oil, crude petroleum, transport equipment, wood products, machinery, appliances and parts, manufactures of metal and LNG.
